Abraham Lincoln's Love of Music and Song  immerses audiences in a little told story

                                 - getting to know Abraham Lincoln as never before through the music that he loved!

Recently television audiences were treated to a variety of excellent documentaries on

the compelling life and character of Abraham Lincoln.  However, none focused on the

rarely told story of the President's passionate love and reliance upon music.  Now,

Jacqueline Kroschell, Artistic Director of Cameo Productions, Ltd., who engages in a

continuing exercise called Living History Through Song....or L.I.G.H.T.S. , is bringing

Abraham Lincoln and the songs he loved to life for today's audiences in a series of

performances by her non-profit company of world traveled professional singers - a

mixed company of White and African American artists, (including a brilliant young

boy who makes a great connection with the youth in school performances and

                                   intergenerational events).

Music speaks to all people and all ages - We target the hearts and minds of Americans

and intergenerational audiences, through the music and  songs that sustained Lincoln and

Nation throughout his life.  Our musical programs draw upon a large repertoire and thus

have the flexibility to be tailored to tell the story to each of our audiences, whether an

intergenerational family audience, university, museum, salon concert or with symphony

or theatre - Example:  School audiences might be treated to a program entitled

"Abraham Lincoln's I Pod".  i.e., what would Lincoln put on his ipod, if he had had one...

A fun activity would be for students to create their own Lincoln ipod playlists,

also providing inspiration for creative writing and theme development.

......Research and development of this project began three years ago, and from our

very first "work in progress" concert, audiences have responded passionately with

standing ovations.  The eclectic variety of the carefully researched repertoire,

punctuated by a dramatic narrative of footnotes, ranges from folk music to church

hymns and anthems to spirituals and minstrel songs to popular songs of the day to

orchestral, military band, choral and yes, even ...opera!!!  A recent concert followed

his mother singing to him as a very young child and continued through the Civil War.

While a few scholars have given us books devoted to the subject,  actually experiencing

live performances prove far more powerful than simply reading about it.
